British schools in Singapore: a guide for international families

British-curriculum international schools in Singapore: the rules on who can attend, waiting lists, fees, the main areas and how to choose a school.

Last reviewed on by our editorial team

Singapore is one of the world’s leading hubs for international education. British-curriculum schools are a large part of the market, alongside IB, American, Australian and other national systems.

Who attends international schools

Singapore’s Compulsory Education Act requires Singaporean citizens to attend national primary schools, unless they have an exemption. As a result, international schools mainly serve foreign residents, and their communities are genuinely international.

Foreign children can apply to local schools, subject to admissions tests and available places, but most expatriate families choose international schools.

The British school scene

British schools in Singapore follow the English National Curriculum through IGCSE, then A-Levels, the IB Diploma or both. Some belong to international school groups, and others are long-established non-profit schools. Many are members of FOBISIA, the Federation of British International Schools in Asia.

Where the schools are

Schools are spread across the island, with clusters in the west (around Bukit Timah, Dover and Jurong), the central districts, and the east and north-east. Singapore’s public transport is excellent, but school bus journeys can still be long. Many families choose housing based on school location.

Admissions, waiting lists and fees

  • Popular schools can have waiting lists, especially in Early Years and certain year groups. Apply as early as possible.
  • Fees are among the highest in Asia, and there are often significant one-off enrolment and development fees. See what you actually pay.
  • Check your employer’s education allowance carefully. Many packages no longer cover full fees.
