British-curriculum schools in Doha: regulation by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, compulsory Arabic and Islamic studies, admissions and choosing a school.

Last reviewed on by our editorial team

Qatar’s British schools are concentrated in Doha, where a large expatriate population works in energy, finance, aviation, healthcare and education. The British curriculum is one of the most popular choices in the private sector.

Regulation

Private schools in Qatar are licensed and overseen by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education. The Ministry sets rules on fees, admissions and compulsory subjects. Many British schools also hold UK-linked accreditation, such as a BSO inspection, or international accreditation.

Compulsory subjects

Like other Gulf states, Qatar requires private schools to teach:

  • Arabic (for native and non-native speakers),
  • Islamic Studies for Muslim students,
  • Qatari history and national identity.

Ask schools how these fit alongside the English curriculum.

Where the schools are

Schools are spread across Doha, including West Bay, Al Waab, Al Gharafa and the areas around Education City and The Pearl, with some options in Al Wakrah to the south and Al Khor to the north. Journey times matter. Choose housing near the school or on a school bus route.

Admissions and fees

  • Apply early. Waiting lists are common at well-known schools.
  • Fees vary widely, and many employers provide an education allowance. Check exactly what is covered.
  • The school year usually runs from late August to June, broadly matching the UK calendar.

Choosing a school

Focus on the evidence: accreditation, teacher qualifications and turnover, results with candidate numbers, and pastoral care. Use our school checklist and compare with the UAE.
