BTECs and vocational options at British international schools

What BTEC qualifications are, how they compare with A-Levels, how universities treat them, and when a vocational route suits an international student.

Not every student thrives with three purely academic A-Levels. Many British international schools now offer BTECs, vocational qualifications from Pearson, as an alternative or a complement in the Sixth Form.

What BTECs are

BTECs are career-focused qualifications in areas such as business, sport, health and social care, IT, engineering, hospitality, creative media and applied science. Assessment combines coursework and practical assignments with some externally set tasks or exams.

At Sixth Form level (Level 3), BTEC Nationals come in different sizes:

BTEC National Roughly equivalent to
Extended Certificate 1 A-Level
Diploma 2 A-Levels
Extended Diploma 3 A-Levels

Grades run from Pass to Distinction* (D*). Schools abroad may offer BTEC International Level 3 qualifications, designed for overseas centres.

Who BTECs suit

  • Students who learn best through projects and applied tasks rather than end-of-course exams.
  • Students with a clear interest in a vocational area such as business, sport science or hospitality.
  • Students who want to keep doing one or two A-Levels alongside a vocational subject.

University and careers

BTECs carry UCAS tariff points and are accepted by many UK universities, especially for applied and vocational degrees. Some competitive courses expect A-Levels, so check entry requirements early. Outside the UK, recognition varies by country and university, so families planning study in Europe or elsewhere should check the rules early. Spain’s homologation, for example, has specific requirements.

Questions to ask a school

  1. Which BTEC subjects and sizes do you offer?
  2. Can students combine a BTEC with A-Levels or the IB?
  3. Where have BTEC students gone after school?
  4. How is coursework supported and quality-assured?

Frequently asked questions

Can you get into university with BTECs?

Yes. Many UK universities accept BTEC Nationals, either on their own or combined with A-Levels, and they carry UCAS tariff points. Some highly selective courses prefer or require A-Levels, so check each course's entry requirements.

Can students mix BTECs and A-Levels?

Yes. A common combination is two A-Levels plus a BTEC that is the same size as one A-Level, for example a BTEC National Extended Certificate in Business.
